On 15th November, Carlton Primary School opened its doors to the community to come and see our amazing learning and find out what we stand for.
With a host of varied examples showing what we do and how we do it, this was a chance to find out what it means to be a pupil at Carlton, how we build life-long learners and how we ensure the children we help raise are ready for a complex, fast-changing world.
Here at Carlton, our curriculum is made up of two strands: ACE: formal academic work focused on the National Curriculum and BBF: building brighter futures, where we link learning to aspirational careers and future pathways. We want all our pupils to achieve purposeful, meaningful outcomes that are relevant to the local and global communities.
Our School Councillors showed visitors around the building and shared their experience at Carlton. Children across all year groups showed their work and talked about teaching and learning in class.
A few examples of the programme for the evening:
Marvellous Me – We Are Artists: an exhibition of Year 1 self-portraits @ Rankin Gallery on Grafton Road.
The Egg Drop – We are Performers: a Year 2 performance around their topic “Penguins and the Arctic” including a suspenseful story and very creative choreography.
Dinosaur in a Tropical Storm – We are Painters: Year 3 have recreated a jungle environment for their dinosaur using delightful colours and brush techniques.
Chocolate – We Are Entrepreneurs/Confectioners: teams of Year 4 pupils created new chocolate bars and pitched their designs to artisan confectioners Choccywoccydoodah and Doisy & Dam.
The Great Wars – We Are Podcasters: Year 5 pupils interviewed local neighbours about their experiences as evacuees during WW2.
Survival – We Are Inventors: Year 6 pupils designed survival tools for adventurer Nick Carter’s forthcoming expedition.
Enjoy a hot chocolate in our garden – We are Entrepreneurs: a group of children who have been recruited for our Tuck Shop have selected healthy treats and prepared hot chocolate for our visitors.
Choir and Music performances – We are Musicians: Our Junior choir welcomes our visitors in from the cold and our Senior choir performed on stage in the top hall. A few children from various year groups played their instruments around the school – including a saxophone, violin, piano and drums.
